How to Write Your LinkedIn About Section (Step by Step)

How to write your LinkedIn About section
The 4-part formula that gets your profile found on Google + turns profile views into enquiries.
(no cringe third-person bio required)
Why your About section never gets read
The first mistake is writing in third person. "John is a results-driven professional..." Nobody talks like that in real life. It's cold + it's weird.
The second is opening with your job title. That's what your Experience section is for.
And the third is burying the good stuff. LinkedIn collapses your About section after the first two or three lines, so if your opening doesn't hook someone straight away, they'll never click "see more".
Your opening lines matter more than everything underneath them.
Pick one thing and just say it clearly

The 4-part formula that gets clients
I've used this exact formula to land high-ticket clients on LinkedIn for the last four years.
The hook. Who do you help and what do you help them do? This has to be specific. "I help people reach their potential" doesn't mean anything.
Why you. Your credibility. Briefly share your background, your experience or a specific result you've achieved, but keep it to two or three lines max.
What you do. Explain your offer, your service or your content. Tell people exactly how they can work with you or what they can learn from you.
The call to action. Follow you, visit your website, send you a message or download something from your Featured section... but only one of them.
Steal the template
Fill in the brackets, paste it into your profile + you're done.
I help [who you help] [get a specific result].
[Your background, experience or a specific result you've achieved, in 2-3 lines].
I work with [who] through [your offer or service]. I also post about [your topic] here every week.
[One clear next step, e.g. "Send me a message with the word X"].
Get your profile found on Google
LinkedIn is a heavily indexed, high-authority site, so your profile can show up in Google search results (or Yahoo, if anyone still uses it).
But Google only shows roughly the first 160 characters of your About section in the search snippet.
So your first line needs to contain the exact words your ideal client would type into Google.
If you're a personal trainer in Manchester, "personal trainer in Manchester" needs to be in those first couple of lines. Apply the same logic to your niche.
Characters. LinkedIn lets you write up to 2,600, Google shows a sliver.
"Having a perfect profile is completely useless if you don't know how to post content that drives people towards it"

I break down how to post on easy mode (once a week, without running out of things to say) over on my YouTube channel.
LinkedIn About section FAQs
Should my LinkedIn About section be in first or third person?
First person. Third person reads cold + distant, and nobody talks about themselves like that in real life.
What should the first line of my About section say?
Who you help + what you help them do, using the words your ideal client would search for. It's the bit people see before "see more" and the bit Google shows in search results.
Should I put my job title in my About section?
No. Your job title belongs in your Experience section. Use the About section to hook the reader and tell them how you help.
How long should my LinkedIn About section be?
LinkedIn gives you up to 2,600 characters, but length isn't the point. Nail the opening lines first, keep your credibility to two or three lines + finish with one clear call to action.
Profile sorted. Now get it working.
